5 ALP men killed in Kandahar insider attack

5 ALP men killed in Kandahar insider attack

Jun 08, 2015 - 21:39

KANDAHAR/GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Two Afghan Local Police (ALP) members on Monday shot dead their five colleagues and fled in the Khakrez district of southern Kandahar province, the second insider attack in a single day.

Samim Khpalwak, the spokesman for the Kandahar governor, told Pajhwok Afghan News a delegation had been sent to the area to investigate the attack.

A security official in Khakrez, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News the two ALP men fled with weapons and ammunitions after killing their five colleagues. He said the pair seemed to have connections with the insurgents.

A Talibaninfo-icon spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, said the two assailants belonged to the movement and they had infiltrated the force. He said the two had returned to the Taliban with heavy and light weapons after killing five ALP members.

The incident comes about a month after two men in police uniform shot dead and injured more than seven policemen in the Maiwand district.

Also on Monday, three border police were killed by their own post commander in western Farah province near the border with Iran.

Elsewhere, four Taliban militants were killed and five others were wounded on Monday during an operation by security forces in the Chamkani district of southeastern Paktia province, the provincial police chief said.

Brig. Gen. Zalmai Oryakhel told Pajhwok Afghan News the operation was conducted this noon in the Lori area involving personnel from the police and the national army. He said the Afghan forces escaped unhurt during the operation.

The police chief also said six Taliban militants were killed and a seventh injured in a US drone strike in the Syed Karam district of the province. The dead included a key Taliban commander Saddam.

The militants were travelling in a vehicle in the Koh Seen area when the drone targeted the vehicle, Oryakhel said.
