President Ghani all praise for Afghan cricketers

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): President Ashraf Ghani has congratulated the national cricket team over recent victories and said the Cabinet would discuss the Kabul stadium’s expansion project.

The president met the cricketers at the President Palace on Saturday when they returned from India, a statement from the palace said on Sunday.

Afghanistaninfo-icon, moving a step closure to joining Test cricket nations, defeated Ireland in their Intercontinental Cup clash by an innings and a day to spare.

At the same venue, Greater Noida sportsinfo-icon complex in New Delhi, Afghanistan whitewashed Ireland 3-0 in the Twenty/20 series and won the ODI series 3-2.

The players arrived at the Hamid Karzai International airport to a warm welcome as senior government officials, including Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah, and others were present at the airport.

Hundreds of fans and Finance Minister Eklil Haskimi, Urban Development Minister Sayed Sadat Mansour and President Special Delegation’s head Dr. Mohammad Akram Khpalwak were also there.

At the Presidential Palace, Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) chief Atif Mashal told the President that the incumbent cricket team was considered among best sides today.

“The president’s attention to the cricket team has encouraged them and that’s why they seized several victories one after another”, he added.

The ACB chief, however, complained about the lack of standard grounds to hold international matches in Afghanistan “That’s why we can’t invite foreign teams.”

Mashal demanded expansion of the Kabul Cricket Stadium and urged the president to play his role in this regard.

Captain Asghar Stanikzai thanked the president for his interest in the game and said: “We have achieved great success in a short period of time and we will work hard to achieve more future.”

President Ghani hailed the players for their remarkable performance which he said brought smile on faces of the entire countrymen.

“Now you are the best team in the worldinfo-icon and it is due to the hard work you have done,” Ghani told the cricket players.

In response to the ACB president’s request, the president asked the board officials to present their requests and plans about expansion of the Kabul cricket stadium in order to be discussed by the Cabinet.
