Zerok district residents seek health services

Apr 18, 2017 - 14:19

SHARAN (Pajhwok): Residents of the Zerok district of southeastern Paktika province are faced with acutely inadequate healthinfo-icon services, saying there is only a single clinic in the town and that too has no doctors.

Surat Khan Zadran, a resident of the district, told Pajhwok Afghan News, they were faced with many health issues in addition to chronic insecurity. “We have only one clinic that has no doctors.”

At the district clinic, there is only one vaccinator who treats all visitors. He added a large number of womeninfo-icon lost their lives each month during childbirth due to the shortage of health centers and medics in the area.

Mohammad Hashim, another dweller of the district, also complained of a total absence of health services and other civic amenities in the long-ignored district.

“Insecurity is ubiquitous; there are no clinics and asphalted roads in the backward district,” he said, adding some of patients, particularly pregnant women, lost their lives on way to hospital in the provincial capital.

Another resident of the area, who wished to go unnamed, said: “My wife was taken ill during pregnancy. But we have no clinic and the main road is insecure. I was forced to take her to a hospital in another province but she lost her life on the way.”

Zerok residents asked the officials concerned to resolve their health-related issues as soon as possible and accord priority to the development of the district.

Public Health Director Dr. Wali Gul acknowledged that not only Zerok residents, but people of other remote areas were faced with similar problems.

However, he promised the two clinics in Zerok that would be equipped with professional doctors in the near future. A plan to reduce mother mortality rate has also been drawn up.

Zarok is one of remote districts of Paktika and most of its areas are under Talibaninfo-icon control. Paktika is a province that has not even a single female doctor.
