Ghani, Xi vow cooperation on B&R Initiative

KABULinfo-icon (Pajhwok): Afghanistaninfo-icon forward to aligning its development with the China's Belt and Road Initiative, President Ashraf Ghani said on Thursday.

At a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Astana, Ghani said his country would actively participate in cooperation on transport connectivity.

Afghanistan was grateful to China for assistance in its peaceful reconstructioninfo-icon and reconciliation process, Ghani was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

Currently in the capital of Kazakhstan for the 17th meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the two leaders agreed to boost cooperation within the framework of the B&R initiative.

Xi noted that high-level interaction should play an important role in guiding China-Afghanistan relations and that exchanges at all levels should be stepped up.

He hoped the two sides would implement their memorandum of understanding on jointly promoting the B&R construction and other related deals and carry out connectivity projects.

Xi called for closer cooperation on security and counter-terrorism, saying that China supported Afghanistan's efforts to maintain domestic security and would continue helping the Afghans boost their capacity.

He reaffirmed China;s adheres to an Afghanistan-friendly policy, promising to play a constructive role in Afghanistan's process of peaceful reconciliation and reconstruction.
