Kunar police, residents differ over deadly drone strike

Kunar police, residents differ over deadly drone strike

Oct 13, 2017 - 12:03

ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Police in eastern Kunar province on Friday said 18 Daesh or Islamic State militants were killed in a drone strike in Sawkai district, but local residents disputed the claim.

Kunar police chief Brig. Gen. Juma Gul Himmat told Pajhwok Afghan News the drone targeted Daesh militants in Morbanda area on Thursday afternoon, killing 18 and wounding one.

He said the dead included four group leaders, claiming the insurgents had assembled in the area to plan attacks on government forces and people on the Kunar-Nangarhar highway.

But residents of the area have a different account. One of them, Mohammad Ismail, who lives in Dew Gul valley, said all those killed in the drone strike were civilians.

He said the victims wanted to proceed together for a wedding, but they were attacked and killed all by the drone.
