Peshawar poliovirus infects Nangarhar girl

JALALABAD (Pajhwok): A girl child from Batikot district of eastern Nangarhar province has been diagnosed with poliovirus, an official said on Friday, claiming the virus had traveled from Peshawar.

Public Healthinfo-icon Department spokesman Inamullah Miakhel told Pajhwok the virus did not match with samples from local sewage system but those of Peshawar, the capital of Pakistaninfo-icon’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

He said an uncle of the girl was living in Peshawar and the family visited there frequently.  

After the eruption of the new polio case, Miakhel said a three-day anti-polo vaccination campaign would be launched soon in six districts of the province.

He said concerns about the virus journey from Pakistan to Afghanistaninfo-icon had long been existed.

Poliovirus has been found in children of families who have recently returned from Pakistan.
